Edward E. "Smokey" McWhorter went home to meet Jesus on Thursday, January 23, 2020.  Smokey was born in Houston, TX, on July 10, 1943, to Eddie McWhorter & Willie Beth Millsap McWhorter.  Smokey grew up in the Houston area and graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1961. After high school, Smokey attended Texas Tech University where he met his future wife, Connie Thomas.  After graduating, Smokey enlisted in the United States Army and was deployed to South Korea. Connie joined Smokey in South Korea where they were married on April 19, 1968. After returning home, they began to start their family in Houston, Austin, and then finally back to Houston to stay.  While in Houston, Smokey continued to pursue his career as a Certified Public Accountant.

Smokey was an avid reader and really enjoyed the outdoors.  Some of his favorite things to do outside were fishing (saltwater or freshwater), as well as gardening and taking care of his plants and flowers.  Because of his love for athletics and the outdoors, he almost never passed up an opportunity to hit the golf course with his buddies. He was a stalwart supporter of those he loved, never missing a chance to cheer on his children and grandchildren at games, performances, and recitals. Smokey had such wonderful and memorable times with his friends, whether at home, at church, or around the world.  He found such great fulfillment from his church connections and serving as a deacon at Champion Forest Baptist Church. Above all, though, he loved the Lord with all of his heart, all of his soul, all of his strength, and all of his mind.

Smokey is preceded in death by his parents Eddie & Willie Beth McWhorter.  Smokey is survived by his wife of 51 years, Connie; sons, Conn (and wife Ashley) McWhorter & Kap (and wife Wendy) McWhorter; sisters Mary Beth McWhorter & Glenna McWhorter Davis; 7 grandchildren; a wonderful niece & nephew; as well as many other family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The Community Ministry Center (CMC) of Champion Forest Baptist Church, or to the charity of your choice.
