Edgar Reeves was born at home December 1933 on the family dairy farm in Aldine, Texas.  This was the last large dairy in Harris County milking by hand more than one hundred cows.  His mother, Avis Gault Reeves, died when Edgar was five years old. He was soon put on a horse to herd cows on the open prairie along what is today Airline Drive and Imperial Valley and Greenridge North subdivisions.

When he was nine years old, he began working in the family's milk barn and at thirteen, he drove the family's milk production to F&M Creamery on Navigation Street in Houston, leaving each morning before dawn.  During WWII, he made the trips each afternoon as headlights were forbidden.

Edgar graduated from Aldine Schools in 1952, one year after the death of his father, Wayne P. Reeves.  He went on to attend Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas.  To afford college, he milked cows, worked each summer as a carpenter helper in Houston's fast paced building economy and worked as a mail carrier during Christmas holidays.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture in 1956 and for three years he taught science and agriculture in the Pasadena ISD in addition to coaching football, basketball and track.  During this time, he married Carolyn Hambrick and their two sons were born.

Edgar decided to follow his father in law, H. D. Hambrick, in the insurance business and in 1961, became an agent for State Farm Insurance Companies.  Edgar was successful in building his State Farm agency into the largest in the city of Houston at that time while serving as a Director of Texas Commerce Bank North Freeway.

Working in his agency, he discovered that a number of State Farm agents and employees were Sam Houston Alumni.  Edgar and another agent, Bill Barber, established the State Farm Friends of Sam Houston State University Scholarship Endowment.  This Endowment provides scholarships to full time students in any discipline and continues to be endowed by agents and employees of State Farm.

Edgar never lost his concern for the education of young people.  He served for nineteen years on the Board of Trustees of the Harris County Department of Education.  He supported the annual Aldine FFA Show and Sale.  He served on the Aldine ISD Advisory Board and on the Houston ISD Vocational Office Education Advisory Board.  He served on the President's Circle at Sam Houston State University.

Edgar Retired from State Farm in 1994.  He and Carolyn retired to their home on the Nueces River in Uvalde County.  Remembering his hometown and its history, he worked for almost a year to secure a historical marker for Aldine.  In 1999, his work resulted in a Texas Historic Commission Marker at the site of the original two room schoolhouse.  Having purchased the original school bell, he and Carolyn donated it to the newly formed Aldine Heritage Museum.

Motivated to do more in 2006, Edgar and Carolyn with their sons Randy and Wayne established the Edgar and Carolyn Reeves Family Endowment to provide scholarships for Sam Houston State University students majoring in Agriculture.  Recently, they established the Edgar and Carolyn Reeves Osteopathic Medicine Scholarship Endowment for students of the Sam Houston College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Graduates of this school will meet the growing need of doctors and nurses for those living away from metropolitan areas.

Edgar led an exemplary life.  He was a man of integrity.  He will be missed and remembered by the many lives he enriched.  He is survived by Carolyn, his wife of sixty five years.  By his children, Randy and Cindy Reeves, Wayne and Danielle Reeves.  By his grandchildren, Thomas Reeves, Kate Reeves, Mollie Reeves Sprinkel and Tanner Sprinkel and their sons, Colt and Shane Sprinkel.  He leaves a sister, Bernice Reeves Nicastro.  He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Reeves Romund.
