Obituary

Debbie Searcy, 66, died November 4, 2020, with her family by her side in Cypress, Texas. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother (Gigi), sister, aunt, and friend to many.

Debbie was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the oldest daughter of Ed and Shirley McKinnie, both of whom preceded her in death. As part of a military family, Debbie lived in several places before attending Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and Music. Shortly after this, during her time as a student teacher, she met her future husband, Roger Searcy. Debbie and Roger were married in November 1976 in New Orleans, La. They made a home in New Orleans for almost 30 years, before relocating to Cypress, Tx after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  They have enjoyed making a new home in Cypress the past 15 years.

Debbie was a proud and devoted public-school English teacher for 40 years. She took the utmost pride in striving to be the best teacher she could be for any student that walked in her classroom. Debbie retired with over 30 years of service in the Jefferson Parish School System along with nearly 10 years of service in the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District.

Debbie was an avid reader and a lover of movies and musical theater. Debbie was known for having a beautiful singing voice which she loved to use singing her favorite hymns on Sunday mornings.  And most recently, Debbie enjoyed crocheting, making several blankets for her family.

But, Debbie's favorite pastime and the most important part of her life, was her family. She took so much pride and joy in the family she and Roger made over the last 40 or so years. This family included much more than just her immediate family; it included close relationships with her sisters, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and many friends that were counted as family. Even more, Debbie knew very few strangers as most were welcomed into her home with open arms and lots of hugs. Debbie loved spending as much of her time making memories with her family and friends.

Debbie, affectionally known as Gigi, was a very proud grandmother who loved her grandchildren more than anything. Gigi loved organizing fun games and "Family Fun Nights" for the grandchildren. Gigi was always there for her children and grandchildren. Whether it be a shoulder to cry on, a hearty laugh or an encouraging pep talk, she was always there with lots of hugs!

Debbie is survived by her husband of 44 years, Roger Searcy of Cypress, Tx; her son Brett Searcy and his wife Sara Searcy, of Cypress, Tx; her daughter Brooke Searcy Pierron and her husband Paul Pierron Jr. of Cypress, Tx; her grandchildren Molly Pierron, Madeline Pierron, Luke Pierron, Mason Searcy, and Ellie Grace Searcy.

Debbie is also survived by her sisters, Karen Simcox (Mike), Kathy Kapoulas (Mitch), and Diane Allen, as well as her mother-in-law Ruth Searcy, brother-in-law Donnie Searcy (Janice), sister-in-law Cynthia Searcy Koone (Robie) and affectionately remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
