David Eino Usimaki was born on May 22, 1934 in Ontonagon, Michigan to Eino Usimaki and Aune Laitala. He attended and graduated from Champion High School in Champion, Michigan.  One activity he loved while growing up was ski jumping. He often said he was pretty good even though he never had any training or the "right" skis. David also participated in basketball, baseball, and the common mischief boys in a small town often created.  At a young age he helped his father, who was a logger, while still attending school.  One of his favorite memories was his senior skip day to Chicago where he got to see the famous Jackie Robinson play ball.  As a young man he worked for Pesonen Logging and eventually he got a job at the Mather B Iron Mine.  Eventually, he enlisted in the Navy and completed boot camp at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California. His first assignment was to NAAS Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi, Texas.  It was on the way to a dance at the YWCA that he met Velia Vera, as his friend was giving her, and her sister, a ride. The dances became a ritual every Saturday and his relationship with Velia grew.  On New Year's Day 1953 he finally proposed to Velia.  They were wed on June 19, 1954 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Corpus Christi. David served on the USS Henderson, USS Lexington, and the USS Philippine Sea. After his time in the Navy he began his career for the Bechtel Corporation. Throughout his life he had the wonderful opportunities to live and work in Texas, Michigan, Washington, California, Illinois, Mississippi, Tennessee, Minnesota, Utah, Oregon, North Carolina, and Tripoli, Libya, North Africa. After 40 years with Bechtel he finally decided to retire, although he didn't quit working.  He continued to work odd jobs at small companies, and ran the books for his son's companies.   He loved spending time doing woodwork in the backyard, hanging out with his family, and watching his favorite team, the Astros, play ball. After suffering from a prolonged illness he passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 25, 2024.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Richard Usimaki, and his wife, Velia Usimaki.

He is survived by his children Mike (Sherri) Usimaki, Mark (Leslee) Usimaki, Diane (John) Hallmark, Debbie (Chris) DeMeo and Elizabeth Usimaki. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren: Julie (Matt) McGrath, Tiffany (Robert) Kuhl, Danica (Chad) Hunt, Amber (Kevin) Newbury, Skyler (Janila) Usimaki, Sofia DeMeo, Katherine DeMeo, and Greg Thomas. Great Grandchildren: Dixie Faith Newbury, Carter Newbury, Bentley Usimaki, Kylie Usimaki, Trinity Usimaki and Kaden Kuhl, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition, our very close family friends Dwayne (Kim) Harthorn, and his beloved pets Lady Prudence Penny (Pru) and Jelly Belly.
