David Wayne Owens, 63, of Tomball, Texas, passed away May 16th, 2023.  Dave was born February 14th, 1960, in Stockton, California to the late Norman Owens and Velma (Frey) Owens.

Dave is survived by his wife, Shawn Ann (Huffaker) Owens; stepdaughter, Laurie Rogers; stepson, Bradley Rogers, grandson, Justin Pike, granddaughters, McKenna Harn and Sage Rogers; brother, Michael (Kathy) Owens; brother-in-law, Clinton (Ann) Huffaker; many nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

Including his parents Dave was preceded in death by his sisters Nancy Owens, and Patricia Vierra-Martin.

Dave grew up in a simpler time.  He could leave the house at sun-up on his bike, go where he chose as long as he was home by sunset.  Lazy days were spent at the University of Pacific watching basketball and playing with friends.

When he was a sophomore in high school he moved with his father and stepmother to Caldwell, Idaho.  He found it challenging at first to move to a small town where longer hair was not the norm.  He met his lifelong friend Dave Lowen when he was a sophomore.  He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1978. They shared many things together as they both came from somewhere else and had a deep appreciation for music and sports.  Their friendship would endure from high school through his friends passing 16 years ago.

Not long after graduating from high school Dave went to work for Amalgamated Sugar where he became a white sugar boiler.  He took great pride in doing his job well and helped others to become more proficient at their jobs. He retired from there in 2010 and still stayed in contact with numerous friends on a frequent basis.

In 1991 just before Thanksgiving Dave was introduced to his soon-to-be wife Shawn.  They were the product of a blind date that never happened.  They were to go on a double date with the friends that introduced them., Shawn and Dave spoke on the phone for 5 hours, met that night and had coffee and never made it to the double date. They instead stuck out on their own. Dave asked her to marry him a couple of weeks later.  They were engaged before Christmas.  They married on March 14, 1992, and were married for 31 years.  They lived in Caldwell, ID and built a home in Nampa, ID where he was a father to her two children Laurie and Bradley. He was a soccer dad, a chauffeur and made sure he did not miss games or school events. He was devoted to them, and his spirit carries on within them. Dave and Shawn moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID and stayed there until their moved to Texas.  They enjoyed hundreds of concerts over the years, attending tons of professional sports games and traveling. They spent a glorious 8-day vacation last year in Chicago watching 5 games in 3 baseball parks.  An extreme sports fan, Dave was a dedicated follower of the LA Lakers, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Reds and the Cubs. He loved playing fantasy sports and amassed many championship trophies in each sport since he retired. He enjoyed competing with his old work buddies, friends, and family members.

He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed talking sports with Justin, catching up with McKenna and for the last 5 months taking care of little Sage. They were inseparable, she helped provide him with a great source of amusement. He taught her the silliest things and they were true partners in crime.

Dave was known to have the greatest smile, the kindest heart and most generous spirit. He was a jokester full of lighthearted humor and tons of love for life.  If you needed help you could call on Dave. He was also a huge animal lover.  If he saw a dog running along the road he would stop and find its owner or take them to a rescue.  He could not bear the thought they might get hurt.  He also rescued numerous turtles who were crossing the road even stopping traffic to give them safe passage.

He passed away in his sleep after attending the Cubs/Astros game with Shawn and will be sorrowfully missed.

Memorial Services will be held Thursday, May 25th, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Klein Funeral Home, 1400 West Main Street, Tomball, Texas, 77375, with REV. George Cathcart officiating.  Memorial Service and Inurnment to follow in Idaho at a later date.
