Obituary

Coye Janette Miller Emmons, 102, from Houston, TX died in the early hours of August 22,
2023, at home, after an evening of love and fellowship with those she held dearest. Coye
was born on November 20, 1920 in a small home in Millsap, Texas. She was the daughter
of Horace Alan Miller and Mary Ethel (Crawford) Miller. Coye attended the small school
system in Millsap, graduated at 16 and then went to Texas Woman's University where she
received a teaching degree. Momma returned to Millsap to teach English and Business
Education for a short time. Her teaching skills moved her on to the "big city" of
Weatherford, Texas. While teaching at Weatherford High School she sponsored many
groups, but most importantly she met the love of her life, Woodrow W. "Red" Emmons.
The two were married on January 27, 1949 and what a wonderful life they had together.
Daddy was the epitome of the true coach which sent them to Ball High School in
Galveston, Texas and finally to Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston,
Texas where they taught for over 30 years.
Coye's passions included teaching, being involved in First Baptist Church Spring Branch,
music and most of all her family. After 10 years of marriage, their only child was born,
Coye "Jan" Janette Emmons Spears. From this point on, momma was a constant
cheerleader for "Team Emmons". She taught during the day at Memorial HIgh School and
attended all of the extra curricular events of her husband (mostly football, basketball,
baseball, and theatrical events) and daughter (choirs, church, and drill team). Our lives
were full of living and she did it well.
Coye Emmons was a gentle spirit who loved God and family. Her legacy of love was
shared in the form of momma to Jan, MiMi to her grandchildren David and Bethany and
"Grape MiMi" to her precious great grandchildren Coraline Janette, Emily Klair and soon to
be named baby boy Overman. In her final years her caregiver became a true member of
her extended family. Thank you Murlian Victoria Abney for your generous love and care
shared with us.
The angels sang and Daddy was waiting at the Pearly Gates for Momma early Tuesday,
August 22, 2023 at her daughter's home in Houston, Texas. Our God was sure to have
said, "Well done my good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord," Matthew
25:23.
She was preceded in death by her precious husband, Woodrow Wilson "Red" Emmons
and parents Horace Alan Miller and Mary Ethel Crawford Miller.
Coye is survived by her daughter, Coye Janette "Jan" and David M. Spears, Sr. of
Houston, Texas; grandson, David M. Spears, II of Houston, Texas and granddaughter
Bethany J. and Daniel L. Overman of Pearland, Texas. The greatest joy she had was
being "Grape" MiMi to Coraline Janette and Emily Klair Overman.
