Corinne Langsam Smith peacefully left this world at the age of 84 on September 29, 2025, with her daughter Fran and daughter-in-law Edie by her side.  Born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 14, 1941, to Nathan and Rhoda (Skura) Langsam, Corinne enjoyed her younger years in the city going to see movies, ice skating in Central Park, twirling baton and spending time with friends.  After graduating from Erasmus Hall High School in 1959, she won a two year scholarship to the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital of Nursing where she earned her first degree in nursing.  Her second nursing degree, BSN, came from Auburn University while living in Alabama.

With a couple years of experience and an adventurous spirit, Corinne volunteered to serve in the US Air Force Reserve during the Vietnam War.  For two years, Corinne spent her time airborne as a flight nurse escorting soldiers wounded in combat from Vietnam to hospitals in Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, California, and other parts of the Pacific.  She was thankful for the little bit of respite these locales provided from the strain of ensuring all her patients would make it home safely.

Corinne valued education and was an avid lifelong student, whether it was formal education or self-learning.  After Vietnam, the Air Force, and a move to Houston, she attended Texas Women's University earning a master's degree in nursing as a member of the school's first class of nurse practitioners.  Corinne often recalled as a young girl, most women's careers were in the teaching and nursing fields and she aspired to forge a different path.  This took her to South Texas College of Law culminating in a Doctorate of Jurisprudence.  Her law degree led from private practice to the Internal Revenue Service where she worked until retirement.

In 1993, Corinne married Robert (Bob) Sloan and spent a wonderful 27 years together until his passing in 2020.  The pair enjoyed traveling together throughout the world, though their favorite travels were to the beach in Port Aransas where family would often join them.  Together the couple took lessons and began playing bridge regularly.  Corinne enjoyed it so much that she played multiple times per week, advanced to duplicate, and treasured the wonderful friends with whom she would take turns playing the dummy.  Bob and Corinne varied in their religion but faithfully supported each other by attending both Northwoods Presbyterian Church and Jewish Community North, where Corinne had been an active member in the congregation for 43 years and served on the synagogue's community board.

As Corinne grew older and her children had grown, she found that painting, drawing and creating art on canvas made her happy.  An added element of joy was that she and her sister Malvine shared this interest which made for many special moments.  Together, they took part in classes and shows and shopping for all the supplies and books to fill their home studios.

Corinne took her last breath at MD Anderson Hospital, succumbing to pancreatic cancer after two years.  Though we are saddened at her passing, we take joy in her MD Anderson nickname-- The Come Back Queen.  We are joyful because she earned this name from surviving not one, not two, but seven different cancers.  Corinne was a testament to the will to survive and encouraged countless MD Anderson patients to believe they too could be cancer survivors.

Corinne is survived by her children - David (Stephanie) Smith, Fran Smith, Jim (Edie) Sloan, Suzanne Sloan, Barbara Sloan; grandchildren - Nathan, Thomas, Alison and Andrew Smith; Destinee and Amy Sloan; Noah Shelton; Sloan (Angel) Dudley-LaCour and Aidan Clark; great grandchildren- Charlotte Sloan, Nora and Margaret Yurcak.  She is also survived by her sister Malvine (Joseph) Wolf and their children- Arik, Joanna, Joseph and his daughter Joanna Kimberly.  Finally, Corinne is survived by Michael Cipollaro, her beloved companion of the past three years.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Rhoda Langsam, her husband Robert Sloan, and her grandson Matthew Sloan.
