Obituary

Mary Claudean Goen Malstrom, a resident of the Houston area, died early Saturday the 13th of January in her room at Unlimited Care Cottages of Spring.

Born in 1932 in Floydada, TX, Claudean received her Bachelor's degree in Education from Texas Tech University. She went on to teach second and third grades in New Mexico and California. She met and married her husband Howard in Carlsbad, NM in 1959.

While traveling home from California to Texas for Christmas 1964, Howard and Claudean were in a serious car accident which left Claudean with a broken back and other injuries. She was evacuated to Phoenix, AZ where she underwent immediate back surgery to repair the damage. During her recovery period they discovered she was pregnant and eight months later she delivered a healthy son, Jon. Claudean always wanted a large family but was unable to have more than one child. She chose a full-time role as mother and poured herself into raising her only son.

During the course of her life, her back and spinal cord injuries progressively worsened, leaving her with pain, bedridden, and eventually paralyzed. In her last years she also suffered dementia. Through it all, her sense of humor and unique ability to laugh at herself served her well. She always had a smile for her caregivers and visitors, loved to joke and give high-fives, and occasionally she offered an exuberant "Yippee!" when served a meal she particularly enjoyed.

Claudean is survived by her husband Howie, son Jon, daughter-in-law Lisa, and grandchildren Mark and Leah, all of Houston, TX. She also leaves behind her brother Dale and sister-in-law Jo, of Floydada, TX. She was preceded in death by her sister, Karen Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to their church, Real Life Ministries, Texas (1400 Graham Dr, Ste B259, Tomball, TX 77375) or online at reallifetexas.org/give.

A graveside committal service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, January 19, at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
