Clark Sutley passed away peacefully on June 16, 2021. He lived for 89 years. Clark leaves behind his loving wife of more than 57 years, Sally, son, Chris and daughters–in-law Hellen and Justine, as well as granddaughter Eden and her husband Greg. He was preceded in death by his elder son Ray.

Clark also leaves behind an army of friends and co-workers, who he also considered friends.

Clark was born in Illinois and went to high school in Abilene, Texas before attending Abilene Christian College (later Abilene Christian University). He then enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. After he returned to the US, he enrolled in Texas Technological College (later Texas Tech University) to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. His first employment after earning his degree was in 1957 with Union Producing in Beeville, Texas. It was there that Clark met his future wife Sally. After they married, the family was transferred by Union Producing to Shreveport, Louisiana for a couple of years before again earning a transfer to Lafayette. It was here in this office that Clark worked on perhaps his most successful oil and gas lease as an exploration geologist, Eugene Island 330. This lease held enormous reserves and eventually was a major reason Pennzoil Exploration bought Union Producing. Not long after the company became Pennzoil, Clark and family were once again transferred, this time to Houston, Texas. The years of hard work were noticed by the Pennzoil brass, and Clark eventually became the US Offshore Exploration Manager. Clark hired and guided many geologists and geophysicists through their time with Pennzoil, and even afterward for some. He was always a tough boss, but never unfair. Clark retired from Pennzoil in 1990. Soon after Devon Energy acquired Pennzoil; Clark was contracted by Devon to work as geologist until 2010.

Clark's favorite activities included travel and hunting. Among the places Clark visited in his life are most of the United States, Germany, Italy, Mexico, China, England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, a few steps in Russia, Peru, Ecuador (including The Galapagos), Hungary and Austria. His hunting adventures and "talking water" sessions are well chronicled amongst his friends and his Sally. Clark enjoyed life and wanted those around him to enjoy it as well. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him, but the memories he created for us will last us all.

A Memorial Service in Clark's honor will take place at the Cy-Fair Klein Funeral Home, 9719 Wortham Blvd., Houston, Texas 77065 at 2pm on June 26, 2021.
