Charles Joseph Heimann, born August 31, 1930 in Mascoutah, IL, died September 28, 2020 in Houston, TX. Charles was born to Joseph Heimann and Edna Heimann (nee Hoerdt).

He is survived by his two sisters, Helen Nodurft and Rosalie Elliott, and his three daughters, Juanita Heimann, Stephanie Buckholdt, and Barbara Heimann.

Charles and Mary Ann (nee Vahlkamp) wed in February 1956. Mary Ann predeceased him in January 2016.

He was known in his hometown of Mascoutah as a studious boy with a pony and a series of dogs, much to his mother Edna's chagrin. During his high school years, he worked as a printer's apprentice at Jenkins Printing, back when printing was still typeset using wooden trays full of lead pigs cast into words and engravings to form the pages. After high school, he joined the Army Air Force for four years, and was honorably discharged by the newly separated Air Force service branch. During his service he spent two years stationed in Japan, working as a cartographer. After discharge, he pursued studies in engineering thanks to the G.I. Bill.

Charles was a career design process engineer for DuPont de Nemours. He started work for DuPont in 1958 in Circleville, OH as a freshly minted mechanical engineer from the University of Illinois. Charles later received board certification as a chemical engineer. His career with DuPont took him with his family to Luxembourg, Europe where they lived from January 1964 to July 1970. Charles and family returned to Newark, DE with DuPont, until his career took him to Houston Texas in 1979. He retired in December 1991.

Both Charles and Mary Ann took advantage of their retirements to enjoy both volunteer and leisure activities such as travel and cruises. Among the most memorable of his personal trips was one to the islands of the Galapagos, a trip that included the heights of Machu Pichu in the Peruvian Andes to slogging through swamps in the Amazon.

One of his volunteer passions during retirement was repairing homes for the elderly and indigent through a program called Private Sector Initiative. Along with his friends Cal Garcia and Barney Griesidick, they put to shame younger volunteers who had difficulty matching their drive and spirit for the job.

Both Charles and Mary Ann were longtime active members of Christ the Good Shephard Catholic Church. Charles was one of the first volunteers to start the Shepherd's Garden at CGS in 1996, supplying an astonishing amount of fresh produce for the food pantries of Holy Name Catholic Church and Casa Juan Diego. His longtime interests were gardening, voracious reading, history, politics and dabbling in coin collecting.

Both parents are sorely missed by their family.
