CECILIA BUTLER O’BANNION

Cecilia Butler O’Bannion resided in Cypress, Texas at the time of her death on August 8, 2026. She died of natural causes comfortably in her home at Spring Cypress Senior Living, with her children nearby.

Cecilia was born on the 17th of November 1925 to Cora and Cecil Butler in Paragould, Arkansas. She spent her childhood in Paragould, graduating from Paragould High School in 1945. Subsequently, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee and there met her husband, Kenneth. They soon married in De Soto County, Mississippi on August 27, 1949.

They moved to San Antonio, Texas where their son Fred was born. The family moved to Kansas where daughter Betty was born. Ken and Cecilia continued to move around the South, first to Fort Worth, Texas, then to Atlanta, Georgia, returning to San Antonio and eventually settling in Houston, Texas in 1964.

Throughout this time Cecilia was a dedicated mother and homemaker. As the children grew up, she started working for the Spring Branch Independent School District Food Services. She worked over 20 years and retired from the school district. After retirement, she began volunteering at Spring Branch Hospital helping to direct and comfort people. She volunteered at the hospital for about 10 years. Throughout her life she was a dedicated member of the Methodist faith. She began volunteering at her church, Cypress Fairbanks Methodist, leading the thrift shop and the food pantry for over 20 years. As you can tell, Her’s was a life of caring for and supporting others.

During her early retirement years, she and a few sisters traveled; highlights include: An Alaskan cruise, Stonehenge, London, Ireland, Hawaii, and Niagara Falls.

Kenneth passed away March 28, 2010, after 61 years of marriage. Cecilia continued to live in their home until she moved into assisted living at 97 years old. She moved into Spring Cypress Senior Living where she made many friends, continued to engage with others and enjoyed playing Bingo.

The family had two children; Fred and Betty: two grandchildren; Leonard (Leo), wife Heather and Christopher (Chris); and two great grandchildren; Savannah (Savy) and Ethan. Cecilia is the 6th of 10 siblings, seven sisters and two brothers. She was the first in her long-lived family to reach 100 years old, though two of her sisters reached age 99. There are, of course, numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
