Cathy Gabriel, 59, of Houston passed away, February 2, 2023, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. Cathy was born on October 18, 1963, in Houston to Joseph Scholz and Judith (Hansard) Muñoz. She married Michael Gabriel, Sr. on June 27, 1987. Cathy was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, and colleague. She adored her horses, dogs, cats, fish, and plants. She took great joy from cars, the Rockets, and of course, the Astros! She raved about being able to see them win the World Series!
Easy to laugh, she enjoyed her time with family and friends - whether around a table, taking a trip to the beach, or a walk in the park.
A cute story from her childhood: Cathy would tell everyone in the car that they needed to hurry home because if the clouds stick together it was going to rain - she was about 4 years old.
She grew into a night owl who loved billiards - and was a fierce competitor, too - winning trophies and traveling to Vegas often. Opponents better hope they were breaking because she was known to run the table - one person recalled this happened six times in a row!
We can't leave out her love for food. Guard the guacamole on your plate or it would be poached! Her son-in-law worked this to an advantage as he turned the guacamole over freely and effectively cemented his spot as a family favorite. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner - it was easy to bond over a good burger or enchiladas . She preferred hers with onions and extra sauce/gravy.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Gabriel Sr.; daughter, Kayla Gabriel and son-in-law, Colin Crundall; son, Michael Gabriel Jr.; her mother, Judith (Joe) Muñoz; her sisters, Linda (J.R.) Richards and Mary Ann (Joe) Cunningham; her step-siblings, Larry Ray Haddad Jr, Amanda (Jim) Haddad-Cornett, Monica (Mando) Ibarra, and L. Joe (Lillyn) Muñoz; her siblings-in-law, Sandy (Glenn) Polasek, Martin (Terry) Gabriel, Larry Gabriel, Darrold Mertz; along with numerous other loving family and treasured friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Scholz; her step-father, Ray Haddad; her parents-in-law Betty and Martin Gabriel; her siblings-in-law, Sharon Mertz and Danny Gabriel; and her nephews, Michael Zuercher and Lynn Gabriel.
