Carolyn Huish Johnson De La Mare was born July 13, 1928, the daughter of Mamie and John Edward Johnson. After losing her mother at the age of 4, she and her seven siblings were lovingly raised by her father and her second mother, LaVon Johnson. She was born and raised in Berkeley, California.
She studied nutrition and earned her degree at Brigham Young University. She met Harold Elison De La Mare in Berkeley, California and they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1952. Together they raised five daughters and a son.
Carolyn spent many hours devoted to raising their children and serving those near and far. After her children were raised, she served with her husband as Mission President of the Singapore Mission, served in the Dallas Texas Temple, and served as the first Matron of the Houston Texas Temple. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and loved to share her testimony. One of her favorite scriptures is Isaiah 58:11. "And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and now shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not."
Carolyn was passionate about art, literature, history, nature, music, and education. She shared her creative talents with those she loved and enjoyed a good conversation of current events. She appreciated and was grateful for good friends and was always aware of their needs. She was an advocate for everyone and a friend to all.
Carolyn is survived by the joys of her life: her brother Harry, and her children Michelle (David) De La Mare Nelson, Dianne De La Mare, Mary (Scott) De La Mare-Schaefer, Denise (Emilio) De La Mare Martinez, Philip (Shauna) De La Mare, and Janette De La Mare; her 13 grandchildren Philip (Michelle) Nelson, Amy (Ryan) Nelson Scoville, Andrew (Jordan) Nelson, Brett Nelson, Camie (Erin Rogers) Schaefer, Sandy Schaefer, Katie (Tristan Owens) Schaefer, Kelley Schaefer, Amelia Martinez-De La Mare, Gabriela (Derek) Reinhardt, Jack (Cassidy) De La Mare, Emma (Chad) Craig, Grace De La Mare; and her great grandchildren Philip, Kendall and Ryker Nelson, Norah Reinhardt, and Cora Scoville.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her loving husband Harold, her parents, her siblings Robert, Marion, Thomas, Cheryl, Yvonne, and Richard, and a granddaughter Aria De La Mare.
Interment was held December 23rd, 2020 at Klein Memorial Park
