Bonnie Jean Gaskill's Obituary
Bonnie Jean Gaskill, age 77, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 23, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. Bonnie was born January 18, 1941 in Schubert, Missouri to Gertrude and Henry Raithel. She was baptized at St John's Lutheran Church in ??Schubert, a small church at the center of the community of which her family was a prominent member. Her childhood was spent on a farm which had been in her family for generations. She and her late brother Leroy would milk cows and perform chores critical to helping the family farm operate (that is when Leroy wasn't playing jokes on our mother – something which contributed to her perpetual fear of anything that crawled). Walking to school, both ways up hill, in the snow was one of the age-old fabled stories she would tell. After completing grade school in a one-room school house, Bonnie attended Jefferson City High School in Jefferson City, Missouri. It was there she became best friends with Shirley and Sharon Gaskill who would introduce Bonnie to their brother, Nathan Gaskill. Little did they know it would be love at first sight, and that the two would be inseparable.
Nathan and Bonnie were wed on August 22, 1957 and remained married for an amazing 61-years. They endured good times and challenges, but they never left each other's side. Their love for each other is immeasurable. During that time, they had 5 children, 4 of which survive. Bonnie spent the first years of their marriage taking care of everything at home as Dad worked hard to provide for the family.
Upon moving from Missouri to Houston, Bonnie returned to work, studying theology and earning an Associate degree in accounting from Houston Baptist University. This served her well during her 24-year career with Transco/Williams. Upon retiring, Bonnie worked at Chrysalis Christian Preschool taking care of infant children. Caring for those babies brought her great joy, and we all felt a part of her experience as she told us about every child and parent with whom she grew close.
Her most cherished moments were spending time with family, particularly when everyone gathered at their house. Bonnie adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren – sending cards, calling, texting and of course visiting to ensure she was a part of their lives. She rarely missed a game, gymnastics routine or event of which they were a part.
Bonnie was a loving and caring woman and is survived by her husband Nathan, daughter Sheree Varney and her husband Bob; son Brad Gaskill and his wife Cindy; daughter Stephanie Stults and Jimmy Cleveland; son Bryan Gaskill and his wife Noelle; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; extended family in Missouri and countless friends; all of whom she loved dearly and for whom she would do absolutely anything.
Bonnie was the matriarch of our family and the glue that held us all together. While it brings us great joy and comfort to know that she is now sitting next to our Lord in Heaven, we will all miss her dearly. She will live forever in our hearts, until we see each other again.
