Obituary

Beverly Jean Shaffer, 88, of Spring, passed away on February 21, 2024. She was born on August 26, 1935, in Monticello, Iowa to the late Robert Postel and Velma Koppes Postel.

Beverly being the oldest of 6 children, benefitted greatly from the early childhood education that began in country schools around the Iowa area. Beverly at 5ft 2in (2 inch debated for many years and beyond), enjoyed playing basketball and would only seek out schools that had a basketball team for her to play on during her High School years. Viola, Central City and Earlville were schools Beverly attended and played at before landing in Sacred Heart Catholic School in Monticello, Iowa until she graduated. Upon graduation, Beverly went to work for Citizens Saving Bank of Anamosa. During that time, she and her sister Nancy would frequent the Dance Halls in Prairieburg and surrounding areas. While visiting her Uncle Mel Koppes in Dubuque Iowa Beverly was introduced to Gordon Shaffer. Beverly and Gordon were married in Stone City Iowa at St. Josephs Catholic Church on January 3rd, 1959. As the young couple began their life together, and they had their first son, Steven Scott Shaffer in Dubuque Iowa where Gordon was working, Gordon moved the family to Texas where he finished his college education. During that time, Beverly supported the family by working at Canyon National Bank. Soon after, Beverly gave birth to 2nd son Jeffery Neal, and then 3rd son Michael Lynn. Gordon's career began take off and Beverly retired to become a full time Mom and the matriarch of the family. Beverly's love and devotion to her family is unmatched. Beverly volunteered her time and support to all her family's adventures. Beverly had to hone her knowledge and skills of all sports due to the relentless activities of her boys. She was a fixture at all events and was always a team mom or a volunteer. Beverly's strong faith and love was the cornerstone of her presence and influence. As her family grew, Beverly switched her attention to grand babies. She was graced with 9 grand children and 8.5 great grand babies with another one on the way. Her grand babies and great grandbabies are a major source of pride for her. There is not a person that Beverly knew that did not get the hours of information as to each and every thing her flock was doing. Her memories and facts never failed her, even at the end. She could recall a story embarrassing or not, right then and there. Devastatingly on October 21, 2022, Beverly lost her husband Gordon & on Feb 9th, 2024, she lost her son Jeffery to a hard-fought battle of Cancer. That loss took a major toll on her and her health, passing only 11 days later peacefully at her home. Our hearts are sad at the passing of Beverly Jean Shaffer, and we will miss her tremendously. We love you, Beverly and will always cherish the love and memories that you have given.

Beverly is survived by her sons, Michael and wife Tammie; Scott and wife Miranda; Daughter-in-law Terri; Grandchildren, Devin and wife Susie, Lauren and her husband Roger, Victoria and Hunter, Lexie and husband Troy, Danielle and husband Ochesé, Jordan, Blake, Nick and Neal; and great-grandchildren, Cole, Kaylee, Liliana, Noah, Johnny, Layla, Hayden, Elise, and her brother Milton (Mary) Postel, sister Diann (Dan) Pavelka and sister-in-law Sue Postel, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by husband Gordon Shaffer and son Jeffrey Shaffer, her parents Robert and Velma Koppes Postel, her sister Nancy Serbousek, brother-in-law Lynn Serbousek, and her brother Tom Postel, and a niece Carrie Ellen Postel.
