Benjamin George Carter was Born in Park City, Kentucky, in 1935. He was the youngest of two sons born to Beatrice and Robert Carter. Ben graduated from high school in 1958 and entered the US Air Force, serving four years. Then he was fortunate enough to enter the University of Kentucky on the G.I. Bill. While attending the university, he met Emily Toohey, and they were married one year later. Upon graduation, he accepted a job in New Orleans, Louisiana, with Texaco oil, in the oil and gas exploration division. After seven years, he took a job in Oklahoma City with Kerr-McGee. In 1972 relocated to Houston, Texas employed with different companies in the oil industry.  In 1978 Ben became an Independent Landman drilling on his own and with others in the US and Canada.

Celebrating 64 years of marriage and raising three daughters, Ben defined Girl-Dad before the phrase became popular. Ben and Emily enjoyed traveling to several countries. Church members of Champion Forest since the early 1970s. In 2002 Ben went on a mission trip to China, where he taught English to high school students. It was a memorable experience for him. Ben always wanted to write a novel he worked off and on for decades. When asked, he would jokingly say, "I have the pages numbered."
