Dr. Barney Walker, Jr.
On November 1, 2019, Dr. Barney Walker, Jr. went to be with His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Dr. Walker, 91, lived with a smile on his face, an undeniable trust in God, and a heart full of the joy of Jesus Christ that radiated to all he encountered. Born in 1928 in Rosedale, Mississippi to The Reverend and Mrs. Barney Walker, Pops, as many affectionately called him, began school in Poplarville, Mississippi. He graduated from high school at Central High where he was co-captain of the football team and 1st Lieutenant in the ROTC. He graduated from Bob Jones University in 1950 and became the Chaplain of the Boys Reform School in Columbia, Mississippi. Pops became pastor of several churches in Mississippi before becoming Chaplain of RG LeTourneau, in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was Dean of Students at RG LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas and enjoyed spreading God's word across the United States with Mr. LeTourneau for over a decade. For ten years, He served as pastor at Garden Oaks Baptist Church as well as serving on the board at Houston Baptist University. In 1979, Pops, along with his loving wife, Judy, founded Barney Walker, Inc., a luxury custom home building business. For over 30 years Barney Walker, Inc. built beautiful custom homes across Houston, the Woodlands, Magnolia, and Tomball areas. Out of all the accomplishments Pops had during his life, nothing compared to the impact he had on the hundreds of lives he brought to the Lord, most notably as Sunday school teacher of one of the largest Sunday school classes at Houston's First Baptist Church. Upon moving to the Northwest Houston area, the Metropolitan Baptist Church and Champion Forest Baptist Church were also blessed with his Sunday school ministry. His legacy of love for the Lord Jesus Christ lives on through the countless lives he's touched. Dr. Barney Walker, Jr. was preceded in death by his mother and father, sisters, Virginia and Justine, brother Pat and daughter Tammy. He is survived by wife Judy, sisters Valda Miller and Martha Jane Vansell, son Dr. David Walker and wife Shirley, grandchildren Abbi, Katy and Evan, daughter Ann Cobb, grandchildren Charlotte, John David and Caroline, daughter Becky Graham and husband Robert, grandchildren Holly and Cliff, son Terry Taylor and wife Angela, grandchildren Cole and Caroline.
