Barbara Lynn Whited, born Barbara Lynn Baker, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2026, after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family, who deeply loved her and will most certainly miss her more than words can express.
Barbara was born on February 4, 1951, in Brenham, Texas, to Grady Baker and Josephine Presley, who preceded her in death.
Barbara was a devoted wife to her husband, Ken Whited, and a loving mother to her two children, David Picone and Sarah Wischnewsky as well as stepmother to Austin Whited, Jennifer Engle and Laurissa Lynch. Above all, Barbara treasured her family and was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Picone and son-in law Adam Wischnewsky held very special places in her heart as she was truly grateful for their love, support and happiness that they brought to her, her children, and her grandchildren’s lives. Barbara especially adored her grandchildren, Demi Wischnewsky, Wyatt Wischnewsky, Allie Picone, Ayla Wilson, Ava Picone, Elina Engle, Evan Engle and Rosie Lynch. Barbara became a great-grandmother shortly before her passing with the birth of West Wilson. Although circumstances didn't allow her the opportunity to meet West in person, his arrival brought another beautiful addition to the family that she loved so deeply. Barbara was continuously thinking of special and generous things she could do for each of her grandchildren. Whatever want they had or dreamed of, she strived to make it happen and this gave her such joy in seeing their delight. There will never be another “Bebe” as they affectionately called her and she was deeply proud of each one of her grandkids and their individual and unique qualities.
Barbara was strong and authentic; she taught her children and all of those around her to stand up for themselves and be themselves. It was always "strongly" encouraged to not be like everyone else - because that would be boring! If everyone was doing something – she was doing it differently...and typically better. We all learned from her out-of-the-box thinking and she grew and nurtured an entire family of truly creative individuals.
Barbara had an extraordinary appreciation and eye for beauty and spent many of her days aimed at making the world around her a more beautiful place. She devoted countless hours to creating and caring for the lush living and outdoor spaces at hers and Ken's Magnolia home, along with the family farm in Round Top. A true creative spirit, she had a flawless eye for antiques and art, a love of clothes and jewelry, and an unmistakable sense of design and personal style—backed passionately by her love and appreciation for Magnolia Pearl clothing. Barbara was certainly one of Magnolia Pearl's greatest customers and Farmloft, in Round Top, her favorite store. She truly had an eclectic style and a natural God given gift for putting treasures she found together in the most beautiful and unique ways. When she was creating, she was in her happy place and couldn’t wait to show you her latest find or opus. Everything she touched turned to gold and all of our homes and lives are filled with so many of her golden treasures that she passed along.
Barbara was a lifelong animal lover and often fed whatever animals she could attract, from crows to rabbits to the neighborhood deer! They were her pets, even in the wild! Her dogs, Lulu and Tater were beloved members of her family and constant companions who brought her tremendous joy. She cooked for them daily and they always had the best of the best in every way. They will miss her.
Barbara was a fantastic cook, and cooking was an especially meaningful part of family life. She often enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes or with an idea she had…which typically ended up with something delicious that everyone raved about. Many of her treasured holiday recipes will live on through her family, bringing her essence and unforgettable legacy to future family gatherings for generations to come.
One of the things people will remember most about Barbara was her spirit. For as hardworking and devoted as she was as a wife, mother, and grandmother, she was endlessly youthful, had an adventurous energy, and deployed her playful sense of humor every chance she got. Barbara was very engaged and invested in her family and friends' lives, always ready to laugh, have fun, and enjoy whatever adventure came next - spontaneity led her days.
Beyond the smiles however, she was always there to support those who asked for it and needed it. Barbara did so much for so many. Family, friend, or stranger – giving and doing for others fed her soul. There are countless stories of her generosity and if she crossed paths with someone who needed something, she often made it happen. Her greatest legacy is undoubtedly all of the family, friends, and acquaintances whose lives are better because she was a part of them. Barbara's gifts, generosity, and contributions in all shapes and sizes were deep...and their impact, never-ending.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Ken Whited; her children, David Picone (Elizabeth) and Sarah Wischnewsky (Adam); her stepchildren, Austin Whited, Jennifer Engle and Laurissa Lynch; her grandchildren, Allie Picone, Ayla Wilson, Ava Picone, Demi Wischnewsky, Wyatt Wischnewsky, Elina Engle, Evan Engle and Rosie Lynch; her great-grandson, West Wilson; and the family and friends whose lives she touched.
She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever be a part of the family she cherished so much.
