Barbara Jane Tompkins Singletary, age 71, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 29, 2025 and is now rejoicing in heaven. Barbara was born on May 2, 1953 in Hempstead, Texas to Lee and Laverne Tompkins and an older sister, Sandra. She attended Hempstead High School where she was the drum major of the twirling team and Miss Hempstead before graduating in 1971. Barbara briefly attended Blinn Junior College following high school and married her first husband, Rick. Barbara and Rick moved to Spring, Texas where they welcomed two daughters, Michelle and Ashley.
Barbara's greatest joy and proudest role was being a mother. She poured her heart into her daughter's lives, always cheering them on and encouraging them to chase their dreams. She was present at every recital, game and event—always with a proud smile.
Barbara dedicated many years of her career to clerical work in the medical field, where her attention to detail and caring nature made a lasting impact. She returned to school to earn her paralegal degree later in life from North Harris Community College. She met and married Jimmy Singletary in 2006 and they relocated to Conroe, TX. After retiring, Barbara spent time gardening and enjoying her beloved cats. She took great pride in maintaining a beautiful and blooming garden.
Barbara welcomed her granddaughter, Audrey in 2011. Audrey was Barbara's pride and joy.
Barbara was truly a force—spirited, spunky and full of life. Her personality filled every room she entered and she had a magnetic energy that people were naturally drawn to. Barbara lived with high energy and those who knew her will never forget the vibrant, loving spirit she brought to their lives. Barbara had a strong faith and a deep love for Jesus that was a foundation and guiding force in her life.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Michelle Lynn Whorton and Ashley Whorton Sanders; granddaughter, Audrey Sanders; nephew, Greg Gardiner (Erika); niece, Leigh Gardiner Hromcik and a host of extended family. She is preceded in death by her father, Lee Tompkins; mother, Laverne Hill; sister, Sandra Gardiner and brother in law, Sonny Gardiner.
