Barbara Amery went to her heavenly reward on May 22, 2018 with her family by her side. She was born to William Arthur Cook Sr. and Tommie Louise Hendon Cook on March 12, 1927 in Atlanta, Georgia. Barbara spent a happy childhood in Atlanta, Chattanooga and Pensacola. She graduated from Girls High in Atlanta.
She met George Amery the love of her life and the man with whom she was to share a loving and adventurous life at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Atlanta when they were both teenagers. The Presbyterian Church was an important part of her life in all the places that their Humble Oil (Exxon) career took them. Barbara was an elder and a lay minister and, in a less formal sense, dispensed love, comfort and wisdom wherever she went. She will be fondly remembered for her work as a Northwest Assistance Ministry trustee, Adult Literacy teacher and Meals on Wheels helper. She passed on her love of the Lord, volunteering, travel, books and music to many generations of our family.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, George B. Amery Sr., her parents and sister Sarah.
Barbara is survived by her son George B Amery Jr. and his wife Sharon; daughter Louise Niekerk and her husband Herb; daughter Nancy Robbins and her husband Richard; daughter Judy Amery-Ryland; grandchildren Patrick Amery and his wife Connie; Lindsay Stehno and husband Chris; Ashley Yu and husband Max; Bonnie Silva and husband Larry; Bryan Turbett, Lisa Robbins-Garland and husband Brett; Danny Robbins and wife Edlyn; James and Patricia Ryland; great-grandchildren Shawn, Patrick Jr., Dominic, Monica, Samuel, Isaiah, Max and Mateo and her brother William Arthur Cook Jr. and his wife Harriett.
The service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday May 29th at Windwood Presbyterian Church, 10555 Spring Cypress Road, Houston, TX 77070.
