Amelia Ann Glazier McStravick

January 24, 1931 – July 25, 2023

Amelia Ann Glazier McStravick left this world on July 25, 2023 and joined her husband, Peter Robinson McStravick, in the heavenly embrace of Our Lord. She passed away at her home in Tomball with family at her side.  Ann was the first-born child of Charles Robert "Bob" Glazier (founder of Glazier Frosted Foods Company in 1936) and his wife, Clara Cecilia "Mickey" Schrick Glazier of Houston, Texas. Born January 24, 1931, in St. Louis, Missouri during the hard times of the Great Depression, Ann and her mother moved to Nortonville, Kansas to live with relatives while Bob looked for work on the railroads and around Houston.  During this time, Ann grew close to her maternal grandmother, Amelia Schneider Schrick, and her favorite uncle, Ed Schrick. Ann never forgot her Kansas roots.

When Ann's father found work with Bird's Eye Frozen Foods, the family reunited in Houston. Ann went to elementary school, first at Immaculate Conception Catholic School, and later at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in West University. It was on the drive to church each Sunday that Ann would see her future husband, Peter, walking down Buffalo Speedway with his large family to St. Vincent's.

Ann attended Incarnate Word Academy High School in Houston, and continued her education at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, she interned as a dietician at the University of Chicago Hospital. Upon her return to Houston, she temporarily worked at Rice University, designing meal plans for the athletic department. A fond memory during this time was a food fight in the athletes' cafeteria, which ended with the male athletes serenading Ann with "Beautiful Brown Eyes" as an apology. She went on to work as a dietician at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in Houston handling special diets (her favorite work). She continued her professional dietetic association into her 80's, traveling to Israel in 2010 to meet with nutrition professionals.

After starting work at the hospital, Ann was invited by Peter's mother to come to a family picnic with the McStravick clan. Though she had another date later that evening, Ann accepted the picnic invitation to renew acquaintances with Peter. Soon Peter and Ann found themselves dating and were married on May 5th, 1956. This loving marriage was an inspiration to their children for over 50 years until Peter's passing in December 2007.

While their married life had them living in Houston, Tomball, Abilene and Midland, an unforgettable adventure for Ann and her tall Texan husband was the almost four-year assignment with Esso Australia--raising five young children in Sale, Victoria.  While others were taking family trips to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone, Ann was herding her clan through Rome, Greece, Thailand, Singapore, Hawaii and Mexico. When they returned to Texas, they settled for a few years in Tyler. However, the final move to Tomball in 1975 brought them full circle and back to the town which they loved and she called home until her death.

Ann was always a prepared traveling companion. During the family's frequent trips to Australia, Ann traveled with her handy first aid kit --crackers for travel sickness, band aides for cuts, chewing gum for altitude sickness, Vicks Vapor Rub for congestion, and finally Australian Halls Mentho-Lyptus Cough Drops, used as medicinal lollies.  On car trips across Texas, Ann entertained her children by reading history books of the local area and singing songs to pass the time.

Ann never wasted an opportunity to teach others from books, radio programs, movies and hands-on experiences.  The World Book Encyclopedias were often dinner guests as she "googled," and read aloud to her children, curious or unusual topics.  In her teen years Ann learned to crab and to use a cast net at Galveston Bay.  She passed this knowledge to her grandchildren at the McStravick annual Surfside Reunions.  As a Master Gardener she planted and grew grapefruit trees that produced bumper crops for 20 years and, with Peter, taught children and grandchildren to garden at their cherished farm outside of Carmine, Texas.  She was a purveyor of family oral history and relished sharing those stories with her family.  Later in life, she also shared her lineage and history when she joined the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Hospitality and service, for family and others, were Ann's great passions. She was a gracious host and, being a Glazier, food service was a top priority. There was never a clean pot in the kitchen once Ann started cooking, but the resulting dishes were delicious. Whenever a child or grandchild was sick, inevitably there would be a knock at their front door, and she would enter with roast and gravy, or a baked chicken, and homemade bread and grape jelly. Always an educator, many grandchildren learned to cook and bake bread in her kitchen, to frost birthday cakes with colonnade icing, and to dig into her famous chocolate fudge pie during the holidays.

No matter where Ann went, she spread happiness, beauty and grace. She loved life and the joy that new experiences could bring. Her smile was radiant and infectious, her laugh lovely, and the delight on her face when her children gathered with her, made every family occasion a special treat. Her love for her husband was demonstrated by devoted care during his many illnesses. And Ann's faith in God, devotion to prayer, and kindness to others were guiding lights to many people.

Ann is survived by her five children: Mary Ann McStravick Cowan and husband, David; Peter Robinson McStravick, Jr. and wife, Lisa; Mary Catherine McStravick Morrison and husband, Allen; Paul Richard McStravick and wife, Peggy; and John Edward McStravick and wife, Jennifer.  Additionally, she is survived by: 19 grandchildren: Peter Cowan; Daniel Cowan and wife, Carolyn; Samuel Cowan and wife, Hannah; Seth Cowan and wife, Shay; Elizabeth McStravick DeMontrond and husband, George; Peter McStravick III and wife, Katie; Stephen McStravick and wife, Connor; Mary Helen McStravick Gates and husband, Kevin; Christian McStravick; Catherine Morrison Semmler and husband, Joseph; Amelia Morrison Waidhofer and husband, William; Mark Morrison; Ian Morrison; Patrick McStravick and wife, Elizabeth; Megan McStravick; Kaylyn McStravick and  Ahmed Dia Mohamed; Kathleen McStravick Garza and husband, Raphael; C. Robert McStravick and wife, Holly; Ann Marie McStravick; 11 great-grandchildren: William Cowan, Westley Cowan, Margaret Louise Cowan, Bridget McStravick, Peter McStravick IV, Sarah Beth Gates, Thomas Semmler, Aubrey McStravick, Jack McStravick, Ford McStravick, R. Dominic Garza; her sister, Judith Catherine "Judy" Glazier Spring and husband, Jim; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Ann is preceded in death by her loving husband, Peter Robinson McStravick, and her parents: Charles Robert Glazier and Clara Cecilia Schrick Glazier. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Arthur Glazier and her two infant children, "Baby" McStravick and "Bobby" McStravick.

Visitation/vigil is at Klein Funeral Home, 1400 W. Main St., Tomball on Sunday, July 30th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a Rosary to be said starting at approximately 5:30 PM.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 31st at 10:30 AM at St. Anne Catholic Church, 1111 S. Cherry St., Tomball.  A family internment at Forest Park Lawndale will be held at a later date.
