ALVIS LABAN MABRY

January 21, 1938 – June 16, 2023

Alvis (Al, PaPa), husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and special friend to all, was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi. He grew up in Edgefield Community, later moving to McCool, Mississippi where he attended 1-12th grades. The school was so small that the only sport offered was basketball, and he was a hot player. He lived on a farm and had to milk the cows before leaving for school and again after returning from school. He attended two years at Holmes Jr. College in Mississippi. He then moved to Pasadena, Texas as his dad became employed at Sheffield Steel Co. After working a short time at Sears and Roebuck in Pasadena, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and spent 2 of 4 years in Japan. After serving in the Army, he returned to Pasadena where he met his wife, June. They married 11-27-1963. During their 59 years of marriage, they had two sons, Mark and Matt. Alvis was a wonderful father and a great role model. Both boys are just like their father, always ready to help others.

Alvis was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Pasadena, Texas for 33 years before retiring. Alvis and June were members and married in Old River Terrace United Methodist Church, Channelview. We joined Holy Trinity United Methodist Church when the boys attended school in North Shore, Galena Park district. And, later after moving to Tomball we joined Cypress Methodist Church. We were always very active in our church, not so much in our later years, but made wonderful friends in each church. We volunteered at Shriner's Hospital for Children and for many activities through Houston Lighting & Power where June was employed.

Alvis is a proud 50 year member of the Grand Lodge of Texas, A.F. & A.M. and 50 year member of Supreme Council and a member of various other Orders in Masonry. Also, he was a devoted member of The Order of the Eastern Star and Order of the Amaranth.

Alvis is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, June Mabry, son Mark Laban Mabry and daughter in law Andrea Mabry, son Matthew Coleman Mabry and daughter in law Natalie Mabry, grandchildren Morgan, Donovan, Peyton, Coleman, and Cody Mabry. He is survived by sisters Gwen McCorvey, Beatrice Edwards and husband Pat, brother-in-law Newell McQuerry and his wife Dory, sister-in-law Mary McQuerry and a host of nieces and nephews, along with goddaughter Nicole McCorvey Gerber. Alvis is preceded in death by his parents Coleman Clements Mabry and Ruby Helen Frazier Mabry, father-in-law Newell (June) McQuerry, mother-in-law Wanda (Jiggs) McQuerry, brothers-in-law Larry McQuerry and Randal McCorvey, along with sister-in-law Wanda K. Melton.

From June: Alvis' favorite color was blue, as were his eyes, which is what attracted me to him when we first met. Did Alvis have any faults? No, only that he was skittish and jumped if anyone touched him, which scared him and the other person. I love you Alvis.

Alvis is in heaven with his LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ, and he will be missed and always loved by his family and a host of friends.
