Obituary

Alvin Kenneth Powell
January 12, 1925 - October 29, 2016

On the afternoon of October 29, 2016, Kenneth, surrounded by his daughters at
Willowbrook Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX, passed away after a 3 year battle
with cancer. He was 91 years old.

Born in Sinton, TX, son of Bert Powell, Sr. and Pauline Hesseltine; brother of Bert
Powell, Jr., Maurice Powell, and Foy Powell.

An Army Veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II from 1943
until he was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1946.
Afterwards, he attended Abilene Christian College, studying Chemistry and the Bible.

On May 25, 1951, he married Mary VanMetre. They raised four daughters in Brazoria,
TX while he worked at Dow Chemical until he retired from Dow in 1985. He continued
working as an instrument technician in various companies in South Carolina until he
retired. Even though he lived in South Carolina, his heart remained in Texas. For a
man like him, retirement wasn't really something he knew how to do.
He was an engineer, an inventor and a tinkerer. He created his own conversion kit
for his car to run on hydrogen. He loved growing all kinds of plants, trees and
flowers. He had a passion for growing Dogwood trees for Mary and loved traveling
with her. His love for Mary was obvious to everyone he met and their marriage was a
wonderful example of true love. Mary passed away in January 2007.
During his lifetime, Kenneth started several Churches of Christ and even built, or
helped build, a few of the buildings for congregations to meet. He was devoted to
studying the Bible and following God's word his entire life.

He will truly be missed but we all know he is not hurting anymore and is finally
able to be with Mary once again.
He is survived by his brothers Maurice Powell, Foy Powell and Joyce, his wife; his
daughters Rebekah Powell, Darla Leach, Alisa Brown and her husband Rob, and Anita
Goff and her husband Rusty; his grandchildren Daisy, Daniel, Lindsay, Kara, Taylor,
Landry, Brittany, Cameron, Bryanna and Kelsey; his 13 great-grandchildren and his
great-great-grandson.
