Obituary

Houston, TX - Alvin Creech Newsome, Jr., 67, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2020.  He was born in Morehead City, NC on March 3, 1953 to Alvin and Virginia "Jenny" Newsome and grew up in Ahoskie, NC.  He was the first of Al and Jenny's three children and grew up in a loving home with a large extended family nearby.  He attended NC State University and graduated in 1976 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering.

After graduation, Creech moved to Houston, TX to start a career in the natural gas industry that would span 40 years--he was a pipeline engineer to his very core!  Shortly after arriving in Houston, TX, he met Janice (Jan) Johnson at First Baptist Church Houston and they were soon married in 1978.  Work took Creech and Jan to Knoxville, TN, a few years later, where their first two sons, Robert and Paul, were born in 1982 and 1983.  Creech and Jan spent 12 wonderful years in Knoxville before returning to Houston where their third son, Danny, was born in 1994.  As his family grew, his career did too, and after working for Texas Eastern Natural Gas, East Tennessee Natural Gas, Tenneco, and El Paso Energy, Creech retired with TransCanada in 2015.

Throughout his life, Creech loved and faithfully served his family and his church.  He was active with Jan in raising their three sons and was a devoted fan of their various school and sports pursuits.  In his later years, he enjoyed travelling with Jan to attend his son Danny's University of Texas basketball games, to Europe and to islands in the Caribbean, and to be with family at "the beach" in North Carolina.  Creech was ordained as a deacon at Central Baptist Church of Bearden in Knoxville, TN, and served God through his church in a variety of roles: as a co-director (with Jan) of the CBC-Bearden singles ministry, as an adults' and childrens' sunday school teacher, in outreach ministries, on church committees, and more.   Sharing God's love with others and serving those around him was a lifelong passion for Creech.

Creech is preceded in death by his parents and survived by his wife of 42 years, Jan (Johnson) Newsome.  He is also survived by his sister Dr. Suzanne Newsome of Lewisville, NC, brother David W. Newsome (Debbie) of Winston-Salem, NC, 3 sons Robert T. Newsome (Eleanor) of Takoma Park, MD, Paul T. Newsome (Katie) of Platte City, MO, Daniel C. Newsome of Houston, TX, and 4 grandchildren, Haddon, Claire, Sadie, and Chloe.

Creech Newsome was an honorable man.  He will be missed.
