Obituary

Addilu Cobb Noakes was born in Fort Worth, Texas on March 28, 1933. She was the third child of five children born to Ruby Susan Wilson Cobb and John William Cobb, Sr. She died on March 22, 2024, in Houston, Texas. Addilu is survived by her daughter, Jana Elaine Noakes Johnston, her brothers, Jesse Ray Cobb (Lynda) and Jimmy G. Cobb (Sue), her brother-in-law Charlie Magee, and by nieces and nephews who considered her their "Favorite Aunt."

Addilu's early years were spent in Plainview, Texas where her father was a professor and administrator at Wayland Baptist College. The family moved to Corpus Christi in 1947 when her father became the first faculty member employed by a new college, the University of Corpus Christi. Addilu attended public schools in Plainview, Texas and graduated from W.B. Ray High School, Corpus Christi, Texas in its first graduating class. She enrolled in the University of Corpus Christi and completed her undergraduate degree there, majoring in English and Education. She was active in many activities in college, including being a cheer leader.

It was in college that she met William (Billy) Vivian Noakes. Their relationship grew quickly, and they decided to make it official. They were married in Corpus Christi on May 31, 1954. Addilu and Billy were an interesting couple to see: he was 6'4" and she was 5' in high heels. She and Billy shared much in common. They both were teachers, adventurers, loyal to family and friends, respectful, dependable. They enjoyed beautiful cars and were unfailing in their support of public education. Addilu taught in San Perlita, Texas and in Corus Christi. She and her mother chose to teach in the same school, which was in the most economically deprived area of the city. She also taught in Calallen, Aldine, and Spring. Addilu later expanded her educational commitments to students by completing a Master's Degree in Counseling.

Their daughter, Jana Elaine Noakes Johnston, was born on November 8, 1955. She was the delight of their lives. The three of them traveled extensively. Tragically, Billy died on May 12, 1982. More recently, Addilu and Jana traveled the world, visiting every continent. She visited nearly every state in the US by accompanying Jana to marathons in which Hana competed. Their gregariousness and unending kindness brought many friends into their lives on those trips.
